ST. PETE BEACH NEW Afterschool program begins at Community Center Help is on the way for working parents struggling to find afterschool supervision for kids. The St. Pete Beach Recreation Department is offering a new afterschool program at the community center that provides tutoring and homework assistance followed by sports activities. Department staff members are available to pick students up from school, provide homework tutoring, and get them active with team sports. The program runs after school Monday through Friday. PETE BEACH Grab a slice, join the fun and games "Fabulous First Friday," a once-per-month kids' night out for children enrolled in first through fifth grades, is a fun evening of indoor gym games and pizza hosted by the St. Pete Beach Recreation Department. It's a fun time for kids and also gives parents a chance to have an evening out. The fee is $5 per child with a St. Pete Beach recreation or play card, and $6.25 without cards. PETE BEACH Social volleyballis just for fun Social volleyball is starting at the new community center. Come out and play noncompetitive volleyball on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. The fee is $2 with a recreation or play card and $2.50 without cards. Call the Recreation Department for more information, 363-9245. ST. PETE BEACH Indoor walking set at remodeled gym A new indoor walking program is ready to start in October. The Gym Walkers Club will stroll every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the community center's newly remodeled, air-conditioned gymnasium. The club is free. For more information, call 363-9245. REDINGTON BEACH Property association plans potluck dinner The Redington Beach Property Owners Association will host a potluck dinner Thursday at the Town Hall. Dinner will be immediately followed by the group's quarterly business meeting. All town residents are invited to attend and bring a dish to share. The agenda of the business meeting includes a review of forthcoming events sponsored by the association, which is actively recruiting new members and encourages residents to join their neighbors for a fun and social evening. Prospective members may join at the dinner. PETE BEACH F. Scott Fitzgerald to be focus of two lectures Have you read The Great Gatsby? Been meaning to re-read it? Now is a good time to do it. Multiple copies of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel are available for checkout at the St. Pete Beach Library, along with free audiotapes and study guides. As part of a program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Fitzgerald scholar Dr. Gail Sinclair will present two lectures on Fitzgerald and his visit to St. Pete Beach at the Don Vista Cultural Center. When: Oct. 6, 10 a.m. lecture: "Why Scott and Zelda Couldn't Have Been in Florida Before 1932"; 1 p.m. lecture: "Teaching The Great Gatsby: a Workshop."
