This bench in Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park in Port Richey was the focal point of the sex sting.

PORT RICHEY -- The salt springs run 320 feet deep. To the east is the movie theater, and to the west is the Gulf of Mexico, and all around are gray fox and manatee, and on the north trail by the still water there is a weathered wooden bench.
The county's vice commander calls it the Hot Bench, and he calls it the Action Bench, and there was at least one time Tuesday when he called it the Bench of Debauchery.
He calls it these names because, for one reason or another, this quiet corner of Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park has become one of the county's leading locations to engage in -- or stumble upon -- an open-air sexual encounter.
"I'd say 80 percent of the business in that park during the daytime is the search for gay sex," the vice commander, Lt. Robert Sullivan of the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, said Tuesday afternoon.
Naturally, the other 20 percent has some objection. Transactions have been interrupted. Zippers have been zipped with great speed. Complaints have been filed. And so, on Tuesday, Sullivan and his crew launched Operation Mangrove, a sting operation that would put the exhibitionists to shame.
Deputies spent more than six hours staking out the park. They watched as cars pulled into the parking lot, as middle-aged men got out, sat at picnic tables, made eye contact with other middle-aged men, followed each other down the path to the Action Bench.
They made four arrests in the first 90 minutes.
Charged with exposure of sexual organs and unnatural and lascivious acts were Michael Lee Daughtery, 59, of 8213 Reynolds Drive, Hudson; Emmit Coney, 55, of 9810 Kent St., Hudson; Dale W. Oehring, 46, of 9234 Binnacle Drive, Port Richey; and John M. Bell, 42, of 10638 Hibiscus Drive, Port Richey.
Each was held at the Land O'Lakes jail in lieu of $1,000 bail.
The deputies watched dozens of other men walk through the state park, apparently looking for sex, but they could not catch them in the act.
One man of about 60 sat on the Action Bench for quite a long while, holding a suggestive pose. About five other men passed him by. There were no takers.
Around 4:15 p.m., at the end of the operation, Sullivan walked out to the Action Bench. It was surrounded by fan-shaped palmettos and inscribed with a message:
IN MEMORY OF LAWRENCE J. FLEISCHMANN
"Poor Larry," Sullivan said. "His memory is being seriously defiled."

Funny how some of you get so up in arms when it involves homosexuals comes up, but when straight people are mentioned, you barely give it any notice. Ask some of the local movie theaters how many teenagers they throw out for having sex in there?

And we wonder what is wrong with society and our children. Let's just open pandora's box and hand moral values and our children to the evil of the world. Obviously it doesn't matter to those who got caught (U ALL should burn for ur transgressions)

You know....the best place for sex is in ones home, or in a motel room. Not a public bench.

Sad thing is that probably most of these freaks (no I won't call them 'Men') are married! Get a room cheap perverts. Nobody wants to watch your perversion. Kudos to the Police Dept to take care of this kind of filth.

Mark, if it was 2 women going at it, would you complain? If it was you and your loved one having sex with a 3rd party, would you complain? I dont think anyone would. But because its 2 men, you find it perverted. Get a life!

Continued... when the guy did go back he walked past the cop, who followed the guy. At one point the perp stopped to let the cop walk by him, as though the cop was bothering him. Eventually the perp and cop emerged, one in hand cuffs.

I've saw one of these guys get arrested recently in a dif't sting. The perp was wrong, but the cop did bait him. The cop walked by the guy rubbing his nipple and then stood in the woods trying to get the guy to go back there.

...I'm certainly not condoning this behavior, but I've seen plenty of straight couples engaged in the same activities in public places, yet that's 'okay'.

Has anyone notified Sen. Craig or Rep. Foley? With all of the Democrat bashing in the previous comments, it seems to me that Republicans are the ones who most often get caught with their pants down.

Four in 90 minutes is about right from what I've seen out there. Quit wasting my tax dollars on stakeouts and install a camera.

Gay people who are "out" don't do this kind of thing. It's only the closeted men, usually husbands and fathers who have to sneak off to the park. Religious folks have caused them to try to be "straight" and this is what you get!

It doesn't make sense to refer to two heterosexual men, who are married to women as having GAY SEX. Straight people need to find a new word to describe straight sex between two people of the same gender. It's impossible for straights to have GAY SEX

Regardless of the sexual preference of the perpetrators, a public park is no place for such behavior. Lock 'em up.

Jonah: "mainstream" society won't allow gays to lead a "moral" lifestyle. You shame them into this type of behavior. Not to mention the waste of money for utter nonsense. It's not the guys arrested who should be ashamed of themselves.

why is it that the gay couples stay home together while the republican "hetro" males are out for gay sex in public? is this what men do when they go "hunting"? this is what the macho trucks here are hiding?

Rommel you are a real idiot. What does to gay men or women in a park have to do with Liberalism? You are a true idiot. These people just need to move it indoors. Or do you think Bush can resolve this? Give me a break you Moron!!

Meth, Aids, Syphilis are a big part of that culture. Get out of our parks and bathrooms! I feel sorry for these cops having to pull this duty that puts them in contact with these men.

why were the addresses printed? Are you just trying to humiliate these men because they are gay? Let the cops charge them if they've commited a crime-don't try them in the court of public opinion.

This has been a known stopping ground for gay activity for a long time. As a gay man it has been understood that this type of activity takes place in the park. I am glad that I did not choose to go there during the sting operation.

Of course these people should be arrested- but it has nothing to do with them being gay. Screwing in a park is not a "liberal, gay lifestyle"; most liberal homosexuals that find this act revolting. There is a diference between gay and perverted!!!

Why not set the bail at $10,000 instead of $1,000? There was a time when the penalty was even more severe. Remember Sodom and Gomorrah?

Good the police are doing something about it. Any kind of intercourse is a private matter and inappropriate for public display to traumatize a child or sicken an adult.

It is unbelievable that there are a bunch of losers on here that think this sting was not a good use of the public's money.
Are you kidding??!! Do you want some unsuspecting family to come strolling along and see that filth?
