Sunday yanking angered Clayton
Days after confronting Jon Gruden, the Bucs receiver says he knows why he was taken out.

TAMPA - The encounter was brief, but the image is lasting.
Beleaguered Bucs receiver Michael Clayton said he told coach Jon Gruden during their sideline spat Sunday that he didn't like being pulled out of a game.
"I told him, 'Don't do that to me,'" Clayton said Wednesday. "Hell no, I don't ever want to come out of a game again."
Near the end of the first half, Clayton dropped a pass. Two players late he fumbled after making a catch. He was then replaced by Maurice Stovall.
Clayton had words with Gruden on the sideline, at one point briefly grabbing his shirt.
But he said Wednesday, "Receivers coach Richard Mann, he pulled me out for a few plays and let me get my head back."
Clayton has just two catches for 23 yards but has been dominant as a run blocker. The Bucs rushed for 182 yards in Sunday's 24-3 win over the Rams. Clayton said although he disagreed with the decision, he understood it.
"You've got to secure the ball," Clayton said. "It's a shame that those plays happened so close together. But I love that (quarterback Jeff Garcia) came right back to me. And he's going to do that. If he sees you, he's going to throw it.
"He told me to get my head out of my a--, and that was that."
Clayton's dropped pass could have given the Bucs first and goal. When Garcia went back to the fourth-year receiver two plays later for a 12-yard completion, he was stripped by linebacker Brandon Chillar.
Tight end Alex Smith recovered the fumble, and the Bucs kicked a field goal.
Though animated, Gruden said he simply was explaining to Clayton why he was pulled.
"You can't drop the football in a 0-0 game and expect to not come out of the game," Gruden said. "Stovall is on the team for a reason, too. We need to get it done. We need to deliver those plays, and he's capable of that. We went back to him in the third quarter. We're going to continue to go back to him, and he's got to be productive when he gets those opportunities.
"That's all I said to him. You fumble the ball, you can't play ... When you carry the ball, when you touch the ball, you put the whole organization in your hands. And I wanted to make sure we're all on the same page."
Garcia, 37, said he sought out Clayton after the fumble to express his belief in the 24-year-old:
"I just said, 'Keep your head up. I need you. Get back in the huddle. Let's put that play behind us. Let's put those couple of plays behind us and get onto the next play because you never know when you're going to become a factor and I need your mind right. I need your confidence to be up there because I have it in you. I'm not going to look at those two plays and now think otherwise. You're still going to be a major factor, and I want you to contribute. I want to give you those opportunities to contribute."'
But Garcia has attempted only 65 passes, among the fewest by quarterbacks who have started all three games this season. For Clayton, who plays behind Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard, that means reduced opportunities.
"I feel bad that he hasn't had more opportunities in the first three weeks," Garcia said. "But then you look at how the games have gone and how much we've thrown the football. It's just not happening as much. But there's going to come a time when we're going to need all four or five receivers to step up and be major parts of the game. And it's important for him to know that I'm counting on him to be there on every single play. There's no play to take off or think you're running off to be a distraction to the defense. There's a chance you can get the ball at any time."
Clayton said despite the slow start and Sunday's confrontation, he remains confident.
"I don't go in the jar," Clayton said. "I'm too positive and mentally focused. I don't go in the jar."

Clayton,
Your from LSU and how you act reflects on LSU alumni! We expect maturity - not hubris out of you. Keep your mouth shut and catch the ball when they give you the chance. When you miss, own up to it like a man - don't blame anyone else

You drop a big yardage, wide open, on the numbers pass that you are being paid millions of dollars to catch & then give up an inexcusable fumble & still have the gall to complain when you are pulled? Get some responsibility, Clayton, or get lost!

Clayton stinks. If you're unhappy because you are pulled after those plays, you should re-examine what you're not happy about. Perhaps you shouldn't be happy that you can't hold onto the football anymore. That makes me very unhappy, too.

Maybe it's me but I see in Clayton a sense of entitlement, like it's his right be in the game. Wake up brother you have to earn that right every day. Every practice, every play. Clayton better start living up to his contract or he'll be history. Soon

Clayton needs to get a grip. He is not producing so put someone on the field who is. He has been unproductive since the beginning of his first year. Show up and you play consistently. Bust.. it is the sidelines-- that is the bottom line.

Look! This is tne NFL, not HS football. Gruden is right. Clayton needs to make that catch; and fumbles are unacceptable. Gruden did the right thing. As a coach, he has a RIGHT to bench guys for not performing.

Is it apparent only to me this guy (Clayton) is a B-U-S-T?! He gets alot more chances because he is a Gruden/Allen pick than he would have if he was a Dungy/McKay pick. Why is Bruce Allen drawing an NFL paycheck anyway?

I admire Clayton's attitude and work ethic most of the time. But, you don't confront the coach like that - ever. Man up, Mike and PROVE YOU CAN PLAY like you did your rookie season.
Garcia handled it well and I'm glad he's one of our leaders.

Another Stroud hack piece. Always stirring up controversy. Dude dropped a ball and got pulled out. Hey I have an idea..how about a whole article about Caddilac getting pulled out of the game for fumbling. BRILLIANT. Stroud is a clown.

I don't know what Clayton has to complain about. He gets paid to catch passes & not fumble. If he can't do that put someone in who can. Its as simple as that.

DUH....Clayton doesn't know why he was pulled? Is he really that dumb? HOLD ON TO THE BALL ....then you'll stay in the game.

Catch the ball, hold on to the ball and Chucky will shut out. We need the 80 of his first year. Maybe beef up and become a tight end.

This lede is wrong. There is no evidence this is a lasting issue. Rick Stroud is an incompetent liar.

It's amazing that Clayton's pass catching ability has gone south. However, he did a great blocking job all day against the Rams. Maybe he'll come around soon!

One of the few times I side with Gruden. This is not new to Clayton. He has been dropping passses since training camp. Of course he should be benched.

This guy hasnt made any play with the ball in over 3 years. he made a few nice blocks this season that is it. If you don't produce then you get replaced. MAN up and do your job. IF not someone else will.

Michael - you have no right to be "irked." To be honest, I can't remember the last time you made a catch in a clutch; I can only remember your embarassing string of drops and one decent block. Do Tampa Bay a favor and retire.

Could it be Gruden isnt so sure Garcia is the qb he thought he was. How many throws did Sims have last year in that time frame. I know last year Gruden gave up on the run. This year Caddie still cant get decent yardage. I say start Graham, rest Garcia

Michael Clayton can't catch a ball. He has done nothing since his rookie year. Why do the Bucs even keep him on the roster? If you are going to pay someone millions of dollars, get someone who knows how to catch.

Claytons' level of concentration is at an all time low. I remember him killing the Gators, never dropping a pass. He is killing us in crucial situations.

Nice juxtaposition to the Earnest Graham piece. If ever there was no reason for standing by a player,Clayton exemplifies it.I don't know what "jar" he doesn't go in, but if it's the one with stick'em maybe he should reconsider?

Yeah, Clayton,...that's because you are playing like a JAR. What's the deal here? Did we spend a first round pick on receiver to have him BLOCK? Jiminy Christmas Gruden... get a receiver who can catch besides Galloway...
