PRODUCT WARNINGS

Warnings about several products were issued Wednesday:

Topps hamburgers: Twenty-one people in eight states may have fallen ill after eating hamburgers possibly contaminated with E. coli bacteria, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday. CDC spokeswoman Lola Russell said three cases - two in New York and one in Florida - are confirmed as being linked to the ground beef, with the other 18 cases under investigation. No one has died. Topps Meat Company of Elizabeth, N.J., announced a recall Tuesday for frozen hamburgers it distributed.

Dog treats: Chicken jerky treats may have sickened dozens of dogs, federal health officials warned Wednesday despite failing to find contamination. The Food and Drug Administration said it's had more than 70 complaints, involving more than 95 dogs, about products sold as chicken tenders, strips or treats. Brand names weren't given. An unspecified number of dogs died.

Toys: More than 601,000 toys and children's jewelry items made in China were recalled Wednesday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, including five more items from the popular Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway product line, because they contain dangerous levels of lead. Recalled were necklaces, bracelets and pendants imported by TOBY N.Y.C.; Spinning Wheel Necklaces produced by Rhode Island Novelty; Happy Giddy Gardening Tools and Children's Sunny Patch Chairs imported by Target Corp.; Thomas and Friends Wood Railway Toys and Knights of the Sword series toys distributed by RC2 Corp.; children's toy rakes imported by Jo-Ann Stores Inc.; and Floor Puppet Theaters produced by Guidecraft Inc.

WASHINGTON

Stopgap passes in House, goes to Senate

The House on Wednesday passed a bill 404-14 to keep the government running until mid November. The stopgap funding bill is needed because the Oct. 1 start of the 2008 budget year is looming with none of the 12 spending bills funding government agencies and departments having been signed into law. The Senate is expected to pass the stopgap measure by the end of the week for Bush to sign it into law.

Elsewhere

Larry Craig: Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, said Wednesday he will remain in office while a judge considers his bid to withdraw a guilty plea following a sex sting.

Gays in military: Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, repeated his view Wednesday that gay sex is immoral and should not be condoned by the military.

Storm: Mexico issued a tropical storm watch for its gulf coast, the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday.

Why arn't they giving the brand names of the dog treats? Why are we still importing human & pet food from China. We as consumers need to demand that all food imports from china stopped. The FDA & USDA needs to be reorganized & more inspectors hired.
