Area boy's photo to appear on big screen

A local boy with Down's syndrome is getting his chance to shine on Broadway.

Joseph Arnoldson's photo will flash across the giant television screen in the heart of New York City's Times Square on Sunday.

The photo will be part of a video production to showcase people with Down's syndrome in everyday community activities, education and employment.

Joseph's picture was one of 215 chosen from more than 2,500 entries in a national contest.

Joseph, who lives in Lithia, is pictured creating patterns on playground equipment at Shriners Hospital in Tampa.

The video production kicks off National Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

Put spotlight on a cure for breast cancer

The 2007 Spotlight on a Cure Breast Cancer Survivor Fashion Show is Oct. 6.

The event includes lunch, entertainment and a silent auction at 10 a.m. at the Palmetto Club in Fish Hawk, 17004 Dorman Road.

Sponsors include Stein Mart, the Center for Radiation Oncology, Bloomingdale Radiology and the Green Boutique.

Hospital gains new chief operating officer

South Florida Baptist Hospital has named a new chief operating officer.

Stephen Nierman comes to Plant City from Spring Hill Regional Hospital. He also was chief operating officer of Tampa Memorial Hospital.

Nierman graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and has master's degrees from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and Xavier University.

His duties at South Florida Baptist start Oct. 8.

RIVERVIEW

Rent a booth, give kids a safe Halloween

Booths are available for the annual Trick or Treat Street at Riverview High School.

The Oct. 27 event, also sponsored by the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, provides children with a safe place to trick or treat.

Local merchants, nonprofit groups or other organizations can rent a booth to hand out treats to the kids.

Booths are $25 for businesses, $10 for nonprofit organizations.

Prizes will be awarded for booth design, best decorations and several other categories.

BRANDON

Craft vendors, sign up for annual church fair

St. Andrews United Methodist Church is soliciting vendors for its 39th annual craft fair.

The fair is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 27 at the church, 3315 Bryan Road in Brandon.

Proceeds benefit local, national and international missions of the United Methodist Church.
