Arts center debuts

What started as weekend photography classes and occasional art exhibits at Gallery 1906 has now turned into a permanent part of the cultural landscape of West Tampa. Today's Nueva Evolucion is the first event at the rechristened West Tampa Center for the Arts.

The event, in the historic former Santaella Cigar Factory, will be judged by Tampa native and Hillsborough County Community College fine arts professor Tracy Midulla Reller. Local artists, including artists with disabilities from the VSA Arts of Florida organization, will showcase their works.

A representative for Mayor Pam Iorio is scheduled to present the arts center with a proclamation during the exhibition.

Bay area quartet Denise Moore and Then Some will entertain guests with live jazz music. Free food and a bar (donations accepted) also will be available. Guests are asked to donate $3 at the door, with all proceeds going directly to the improvement of the arts center.

Today, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., 1906 Armenia Ave., Tampa. For information, call 453-4381.
