Arts center debuts What started as weekend photography classes and occasional art exhibits at Gallery 1906 has now turned into a permanent part of the cultural landscape of West Tampa. Today's Nueva Evolucionis the first event at the rechristened West Tampa Center for the Arts. The event, in the historic former Santaella Cigar Factory, will be judged by Tampa native and Hillsborough County Community College fine arts professor Tracy Midulla Reller. Local artists, including artists with disabilities from the VSA Arts of Florida organization, will showcase their works. A representative for Mayor Pam Iorio is scheduled to present the arts center with a proclamation during the exhibition. Bay area quartet Denise Moore and Then Some will entertain guests with live jazz music. Free food and a bar (donations accepted) will also be available. Guests are asked to donate $3 at the door, with all proceeds going directly to the improvement of the arts center. Today, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., 1906 Armenia Ave., Tampa. From frightening haunted houses to ghoulish entertainment, Busch Gardens gets a Halloween makeover. The event runs through Oct. 28. USF Lecture: The University of South Florida presents guest speaker Khenpo Ugyen as he delivers the lecture "Expanding Compassion in Daily Life - A Tibetan Perspective." The Tibetan monk was enrolled in the first class of Shri Nalanda Institute at Rumtek. He taught Buddhist philosophy for six years at Nimalung Monastery in Bhutan. Then, he became senior abbot at Nalanda Institute at Rumtek Dharma Chakra Center from 1997 to 2002. 4 p.m. BEH 104, USF, Tampa; free. Call 250-0017. Zoo Boo: Lowry Park Zoo comes alive and transforms into a family-friendly fright zone during its two-day Shriek Peek Weekend event. The entire family is invited to get a taste of Zoo Boo as they meander through the shadowy darkness of haunted houses and spooky trails. Shriek Peek Weekend will run today and Saturday. Zoo Boo runs Oct. 5-28. Today's session features Fanni Green, associate professor for the University of South Florida Theater Program. Green has been teaching voice/speech and acting to theater students for eight years. She teaches one full semester each year, then returns to New York where she lives and works on stage, films and television. 2 p.m.; Tampa Museum of Art, 600 N Ashley Drive, Tampa; $3-$8. Call 274-8534. 4 Thursday Florida Orchestra: Stefan Sanderling opens the new season with Canadian pianist Louis Lortie performing Edvard Grieg'sPiano Concerto paired with Gustav Mahler'sSymphony No. 1, Titan. Masterworks concerts are preceded by discussions one hour before curtain time.
