Babysitter arrested after child burned
Authorities question her story of how the boy was burned while she was giving him a bath.

Maggie Nicole Williams, 20, was charged with aggravated child abuse.

TAMPA - Second-degree burns covered both the baby's feet and ankles like stockings, police said.
The phenomenon, known as a "stocking glove" burn, is commonly associated with child abuse: A child does not step into burning water with both legs, the theory goes.
But that's what Ruth Williams said happened Tuesday morning when her 20-year-old daughter tried to give an 18-month-old a bath.
"You know how 1-year-olds are," Williams said Thursday.
Maggie Nicole Williams of 3538 N 20th St. was arrested Wednesday a day after her mother called 911 to report that the boy they were babysitting had been burned while getting a bath.
Williams was charged with aggravated child abuse and was being held at the Orient Road Jail late Thursday on $25,000 bail.
The boy Williams was babysitting is still in the hospital, said a family friend. The boy's young mother is with him.
Police say Maggie Williams boiled a pot of water and poured it into a metal pail, then intentionally immersed the child in the water.
"He just started crying, whining crying," Ruth Williams said of the incident. "He didn't scream. And she said, 'Oh mom, he's peeling!'"
But Ruth Williams, who said she was ironing the boys clothes at the time it happened, tells the story differently than police. Her daughter boiled the water on the stove, she said, because the gas was out at their home, 3539 N 20th St. Apt. A, in Belmont Heights Estates.
As Maggie Williams was about to mix in the cold water, the baby stepped in on his own.
"It was an accident," Ruth Williams, 51, said as she sat on her front porch. "I have kept children all my life, I never even hit my child. I don't believe in hurting children."
Originally, Tampa Fire Rescue crews said the babysitter told them she was running hot water to warm a bath when she looked away, and the boy stepped in.
But Tampa police and Dr. William Brooks from Tampa General Hospital's child protection team told investigators the injuries were "inflicted," according to an arrest report.
Officer J.C. Bazter's report said that when he confronted Maggie Williams with the inconsistencies in her story, she "admitted she heated the water on the stove and placed the victim into the water. But the remaining details of her story were inconsistent with the doctor's evaluation."
Ruth Williams says law enforcement is telling "nothing but lies."
Her daughter, she said, is a church-going woman, a college student, who has always made straight A's and never been in trouble. State records show this is Maggie Williams' first arrest.
When it was clear the boy was injured, her daughter told paramedics she wanted to ride in the ambulance with the 18-month-old to TGH. If Maggie had something to hide, Ruth Williams argued, she would not have offered.
"I'm not going to purposely let my child do something to hurt a child," Ruth Williams said, indignant.
Williams and her daughter agreed to babysit the child overnight Monday as they often do for no charge, she said.
The mother of the baby could not be reached for comment Thursday night.
Tampa fire officials are using the baby's case as a cautionary tale.
Parents and caregivers, they warned, should set household water heaters to no more than 125 degrees.
Water at 120 degrees takes several minutes to cause a scalding injury. Water at 150 to 160 degrees will scald the skin in just a few seconds.

Did the resident advise the baby's Mom that the gas was not working? And why are we boiling the water?, the baby is not a egg?, but the William's brains are like like eggs, not boiled, but fried. Law enforcement was tired of hearing the lies from you

I wish they'd treat child abusers w/the same harsh punishment they give child molesters... a lifetime felony record & watching where they live! My dad just sent me an e-story about a daycare rated w/3 stars who taped a 4-mth bb's mouth w/a pacifier!

All babies are different. My son has been getting in the tub on his own for a few months now and he's only 21 months. Accident or not, a child is put in the tub normally with both feet at the same time - duh!

Oh please! A bath? You live in Florida! Wake up!! Our cold water is warm enough to give a bath without boiling water. Think people, there was no reason to make any hot water. Poor child, my prayers are with her. God protect her!

she is a monster. The mother does need to wake up. So because she goes to church that makes her unabe to do what she did. Both she and her mother need to never be around another child alone.

I hope this girl goes to jail for a long, long time. She's obviously a psychopath! I hope that the other inmates hear about what she did and make her life a living hell. Church going woman, college student, blah, blah, blah. GO TO JAIL!

If that baby got into the tub on his own he would have scalded more than his feet he would have fallen in and scalded other parts of the body too. my two and a half year old has a problem with getting in on her own ... he was ONLY 18 MONTHS!!

What does placing a baby in a pan of boiled on a stove hot water have to do with setting the temps of water heaters to 125 dgs ? Its obvious this is a tragic case of stupidity on the part of the babysitr not intentional child abuse.

I've a 12 month old who's tried to climb into a tub (he doesn't walk yet) when my back was turned a second. It's not hard for me to believe the child might have quickly climbed in on his own. Poor judgement/watching, but it doesn't seem like abuse.

Accidents do happen, but this was not an accident! 1. Both feet and ankles are burned, child had to be lifed and placed into the scalding water. 2. Child didn't scream, but was whining!! 2nd degree burns, NO WAY!

Classic case of child abuse. There should be no bail in this case. She should stay in jail until she goes to trial. If she would go to this extreme, no doubt there have been offensives in the past that need investigating. Keep her off the streets.

I would say she may be a little dim, but it is possible this was entirely an accident. Maybe she didn't know to test the water.

I think that Maggie Williams and her lying mother should be dipped in boiling water...their whole bodies. These are very ill people that should both be evaluated and put in state mental facilities...FOREVER!

We need to change the way we treat child abusers. They should be punished in the exact way that they have abused their victim. Inflict the same pain and see if they like it.These people are sick if they can hurt a precious child and then lie about it

The last few paragraphs of this article provide a beneficial tip, but is really irrelevant to this story where a psychopath immersed a precious child in BOILING water.

I firmly believe this was an accident....a sad one for sure. I just think that possibly this young woman did not realize just how hot the water was and shocked when she saw the horrible outcome. My prayers are with both the baby and his family.

She's "a church-going woman and a college student". Well, we all know church goers & college students never commit a crime! Puh-lease. That poor child didn't step into boiling water with both feet, than stand there. Lock her up & throw away the key!
