TORONTO - Scott Kazmir, like others, hopes better days are ahead for the Devil Rays, who with a 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays on Friday guaranteed they'll again finish with the majors' worst record. But the young ace said Friday they need some veteran help to get there, that he's tired of being part of what's "kind of the laughingstock of baseball" and suggested the Rays' competitiveness and commitment to winning will be a large factor in whether he signs a long-term deal. "I'm interested to hear what they have to say," said Kazmir, who can't be a free agent until 2011. "Let's see what happens. ... "The thing is, we've got to show that we can win out there. That's the first thing you want to do - you want to go out and be on a team that wants to be in contention and wants to win. "It's frustrating every year when you come to different parks and everyone's all over you because you're last in the entire league every year. It's tough being kind of the laughingstock of baseball right now. It really is. We're better than what our record shows but we're young, we're still going through growing pains and everything. It's tough, because we need some more help." Kazmir, 23, is eligible for arbitration for the first time after this season - likely resulting in a raise in excess of $3-million - but remains under the Rays' control through the 2010 season. He has had some talks with them about a long-term contract that would "buy out" his first year or two of free agency - similar to the deals the Rays made with Carl Crawford and Rocco Baldelli - in return for guaranteed millions, but he said both sides agreed to wait until after the season to continue. Asked about signing Kazmir, as well as James Shields, to long-term deals, principal owner Stuart Sternberg said Thursday at Tropicana Field: "Like Bob Barker would say, 'If the price is right."' Kazmir said the young Rays would benefit greatly from veteran influence to show them "how to go about winning and stay consistent," and claimed that without veterans of their own they instead consult with opponents. "Us young guys, we have to learn on the go, we've just got to learn in the big leagues. That's why you see most of us ... when we play different teams, we talk to all of the veterans and get as much as we can from them," he said. "In the weight room we talk to them as much as we can, trying to pick their brains apart." Executive VP Andrew Friedman said that Kazmir isn't the only one who wants to see the Rays get better and that it will take the best efforts of all players, staff management and ownership to make it happen. Sternberg promised a payroll increase of at least 20 percent for next season, though that's only to around $34-million. "I think everyone in this organization - I don't think it's exclusive to Kaz - wants to win and all of our focus is on building this organization to win the American League East and, more importantly, be able to sustain that success," Friedman said. "So I think all of us share in that exact same sentiment." Kazmir said the Rays 65-95 aren't far from becoming a winning team but there are some "spots" that need to be addressed beyond the "great" trades the Rays made at midseason. "I thought that we could have made some good moves this spring training; hopefully this next year, we'll address those," he said. "You see what we have here and you think we're really almost there but we've got to get some help. We're all young guys. In this division you've got to have a little help. ... We've got to step it up a little bit." Marc Topkin can be reached at topkin@sptimes.com View his blog at blogs.tampabay.com/rays.

I met kaz in detroit after a game and He signed for me, He is a great guy He deserves more than what he's making and as far as that goes He needs to go to the Braves(moving there) so He can have a winning team and a great organaization behind him

I think what this article really means is, " Kazmir is gone in 2010 "

I am in the minority on this. I wish that Kazmir could and should have been an Angel, but they did not thinkl they could sign him, so they took Joe Saunders. Imagine Kazmir pitching against the Red Sox who he owns for the Angels in the playoffs.

There is no "kind of" about it! The Rays ARE the laughingstock of baseball and have been for the entire decade of their existence! They are the "thank God for Mississippi" team of baseball. The one other teams can always count on to be worse.

Throwing money at the problem isn't going to change anything. As a businessman, it was easy to see there was much more that needed to be done than just putting good players on the field. That's not going to solve all the problems Namoli left.

I'm tired of hearing everyone complain about this year's salary. If you open a business you have 1, 3, 5, 10 year plans, etc. Adding some high priced veterans right now isn't going to make a difference...look at the O's.

My prediction: The D-Rays will be around a lot longer than Scott Kazmir. He's a #4 starter on a decent team.

Somebody has to run the team. I vote Kazmir. It's obviously not Maddon, Sternberg, Friedman, Silverman, Raymond, or The Heckler.

I am still in disbelief that the ownership would make such a comment about our young ace. "Like Bob Barker would say, 'If the price is right."' That tells me one thing that he is not committed to having a winning team, just a cheap one!!

Kaz is right, but look at the value they got from last years off season picks. If they come close to getting another Pena, keep developing good young pitching and improve the catching, that will do a lot. Don't spend just to spend.

If the price is right? What an answer! The answer should have been "Absolutely". Of course the price has to be right, but that should not have been Sternberg's first thought. Just shows you the Rays top priority, and it's not winning.

Kaz is absolutely right, these guys need the veteran support we "clueless" fans have been clamoring for all along. By putting pressure on management, Scott's showing that he might just be one of those veteran leaders this team desperately needs.

Kaz is dead on right. This team is NOT as bad as perceived. Morons like ESPN's Bill Simmons fuel demean this team and its fans at every opportunity. But to compete in the East the owners have GOT to spend about $50M. Just spend it smartly.

Like the Bucs, it will never happen until the right set of players and coaches get there and ownership changes. The shame of it is they have a good mix of the right players already. Owners - are you committed to winning? Bring back Lou.

Dan- Do you work for the Rays? I've been paying to watch this crap since '98. This past year how many times did idiot Maddon pull a starter with a great game going to put in a reliever to blow it. The current mgmt is interested in PROFIT-not winning!

If they put a product on the field the fans will come. See the Bucs and Lightning for evidence of that. Owners invest $, NOT the fans. These guys want it the other way around. At this rate 2011 will be 1998! Kaz, good for you. You told the truth.

Dan, you don't know what you're talking about. It's called revenue sharing and the Ray's are MLB's ONLY team who spend less that they receive and that difference increased dramatically under Sternberg. I can't cry for a guy pocketing millions.

Sternberg promises a 20% payroll increase. Again. Guess that really means he's going to reduce payroll. Again. This guy is laughing at every sucker, er, fan that shows up at the stadium. The Ray's are gone in 2 years and Pena's already gone. GREED.

The Rays will never pay a cent this year in the promised 20% payroll hike. If you take the 25 million salary x 20% = 5 mil. Now factor in If you average 19000 fans per game with 2 people in a car = 9500 x $10 = $95, per game x 81 games = $7,695,000

You are ALL great at spending someone else's money! With poor attendance, where's the money to come from? If I owned the team, I wouldn't want it coming out of MY wallet every year. If ya ain't willing to pony up, you'll get what you (don't) pay for.

I'm also glad Kaz said this. We're all tired of cheap owners. If you don't want to spend money, don't buy a baseball team. Do you think they'll pay to keep Pena after his big year? Unfortunately, the answer for this owner will be NO WAY. Very sad.

The Rays already showed their commitment to winning and commitment to their wallets, when the re-signed Clueless Joe Maddon. He's cheap and doesn't complain when given little to work with. That one move has totally jaded this former diehard fan.

The Rays are not that far from winning the AL East. They played the Yanks well the past 2 years and they give the Red Sox all they can handle, especially Kaz. They need a starter, a closer, a new contract for Pena, and DH Baldelli to keep him healthy

"I'm interested to hear what they have to say," said Kazmir..., How about, "Be quiet and play baseball." You don't have to really work for that money, and you ain't in Iraq, are you? Play your little game because it really means nothing anyway.

Saying payroll will go up 20 percent hardly means anything because I bet that's what it will take just to keep Kaz, Pena and the current roster. I would not be surprised if Stu moves the team.
