Editor's note: The following is a recap of the week's news events, in the words of the newsmakers.
"You can't blame a guy for trying."
Pasco Commissioner Ann Hildebr and after Sheriff Bob White requested that any unspent money this year go toward new deputy positions in 2008.
"I was speaking out against discrimination, and that was perfectly understood. I said nothing wrong. I was voicing my disdain. Everybody who knows me knows that saying I'm prejudiced is baloney."
Mathias Brewi, Port Richey's new public safety director, after a police officer complained that Brewi had used the "n" word.
"It may be easier and less expensive to bury garbage, especially when it's in another county. But in the long run, I certainly prefer taking garbage and turning it into electricity."

The commission agreed to send 61,000 tons of garbage to Osceola County next year to buy time before deciding whether to expand its incinerator.
"Do you believe everything you read in the paper?"
Robert Wood, who built a motorcycle racetrack near Dade City before county officials could review the plans. The Pasco Times detailed his actions.
"Sure I do."
County Administrator John Gallagherin response to Robert Wood at the county Development Review Committee, which allowed the racetrack despite Wood's actions.
"I haven't been the greatest mother in the world, but I'd do anything for my daughter. And I'd do this again."
Heather Esquivel, who was arrested and accused of harboring her teenage daughter who ran away from a foster home. Esquivel had lost custody of the girl because of a drug addiction.
