Another week, another set of surprises. Did Clearwater's pass-happy offense really run the ball 36 times while grinding out a win against Gibbs? And what about Tarpon Springs? We thought the Spongers were on a roll. Some things remained the same, though: Largo won again to remain undefeated (although it took two overtimes to decide it), while Northside Christian and Keswick Christina continue to prove they are teams to be reckoned with in the small-school football world. Stay tuned, because there's more drama to follow.
Defensive player of the week
Jared DiMaggio Keswick Christian, RB He wanted to be the focal point of the Crusaders' offense against Cambridge. Keswick coach Rick Sanson obliged, and DiMaggio responded with 219 yards on 21 carries and two scores in a win.
Offensive player of the week
Mundare Francis Boca Ciega, LB Francis usually makes headlines on offense. But he showed he has a nose for the ball on defense, recovering a fumble caused by defensive end Julian Forte in the end zone for a touchdown. Francis also played a big role in helping the Pirates record a shutout.
Raheem Smith Dixie Hollins He scored three touchdowns in the Rebels' win over Palm Harbor University.
Cameron Cabarris Osceola, TB He ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns against rival Seminole.
Orhian Johnson Boca Ciega, QB Johnson threw for more than 100 yards and two touchdowns against St. Petersburg.
Adaris Bellamy Dunedin, RB The workhorse back ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns in loss to Largo.
Leonard Johnson Largo, QB The dual-threat quarterback ran for 100 yards and threw for more than 50 against Dunedin.
Harrison Settle Shorecrest, RB/LB Settle accounted for three touchdowns in the Chargers 56-8 thumping of Mount Dora. Settle scored on runs of 30 and 15 yards, then added a 25-yard interception return.
Kevin Tapp St. Petersburg Catholic, QB The Barons fell a little short, but Tapp tossed a pair of TD strikes and had a hand in two two-point conversions.
Benjamin Kaylor Northside Christian, WR Kaylor had touchdown runs of 23 and 58 yards in the Mustangs' 35-12 win.
