Jenkins' injury not severe

Wesley Chapel quarterback Greg Jenkins, knocked out of Friday's 24-17 loss to Zephyrhills in the first series on a hit by Bulldogs senior Tyler Smith, suffered a contusion on the top of his throwing shoulder and not a separated shoulder as feared.

"Doctors said it's just a bad bruise," said his mother, Sharon Jenkins. "They wouldn't want him to play this week."

Jenkins said he can lift his arm "all the way in the air," but it hurts when he tries reaching across his body. He has a followup visit Oct.17. Sophomore C.J. West is expected to start in his place.

On the mend

Expect Mitchell to be at full strength heading into its district showdown with Gaither on Friday. Receiver Tyrone Hendrix, who left the field late in a 36-27 loss to Hudson, practiced Monday and should play. Coach Scott Schmitz said he thinks the senior was simply dehydrated. Senior Tate Humphrey sprained ankle practiced Monday and will play Friday.

Arnold ailing

Zephyrhills played Monday's volleyball match against Springstead without senior setter Kristen Arnold, forcing the Bulldogs to switch from a two-setter formation to one that employs just one setter. Arnold (back) is expected to return before the end of the season. The Bulldogs soon begin a brutal stretch that includes games against Land O'Lakes, Hudson, Nature Coast and River Ridge.
