He could be up against NBA owner Mark Cuban.

As if coaching a Tampa coal-mining company weren't exciting enough, Walter Industries Inc. chairman Michael Tokarz may be vying to buy the Chicago Cubs.

Tokarz, a 57-year-old Illinois native and former Kohlberg Kravis Roberts executive who joined Walter's board in 1987, declined to discuss the rumor with the Chicago Tribune on Oct. 2. If true, he faces steep competition from potential bidders such as billionaire Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

A resident of Purchase, N.Y., and Miami Beach, Tokarz is chairman and portfolio manager of publicly traded MVC Capital Inc.

The Cubs were put on sale in April as part of a deal by real estate kingpin Sam Zell to acquire owner Tribune Co.
