Spring Hill USA preseason play
Starving for wrestling? Springstead coach Eric Swensen has organized a tournament Saturday at Springstead that should draw more than 130 competitors from across the state.
Wrestlers are still encouraged to participate though they'll need a USA card. Weigh-ins are at 9 a.m. High school age wrestling begins at 11 a.m. For more information contact Swensen at (352) 428-8027.
Century mark
Keith Paulk's 100th volleyball victory was also one of his biggest. The Mitchell coach passed the century mark when his Mustangs beat Sickles for just the second time in his three years at the helm. The Gryphons entered the match having won 12 straight and had just cracked the Class 6A top 10 for the first time this season.
"It's a monster win," said Paulk, who coached at Clearwater for two years before moving up S.R. 19 to New Port Richey.
It also sets up a monster rubber match if the teams meet in the Class 6A, District 7 tournament, which Mitchell happens to host.
Paulk, in the middle of his third season, said he has committed to coaching at Mitchell for at least two more years.
Nature Coast approved for Ky. trip
The Nature Coast girls basketball team received approval from the Hernando County School Board in a 3-2 vote to participate in the Fifth/Third Holiday Classic on Dec. 18-23 in Lexington, Ky. A decision to allow the Nature Coast girls soccer team to attend the Welsh International Super Cup in England and Wales in July will be considered at a future meeting as the board expressed liability concerns. The next board meeting is scheduled for Oct. 16.
