Trio enters Hall
Sickles football coach Pat O'Brien is one of three former Terriers standouts set to be inducted tonight into Hillsborough High's football Hall of Fame during a 6:30 ceremony at the school's auditorium. O'Brien (1981 grad), a former Terriers QB and Guy Toph Award winner, will be joined by former University of Tampa defensive back Pete Scaglione (1967) and former Miami quarterback Tom Murray (1957). "It's unbelievable," O'Brien said. "When you think about the program's history, that's a huge honor."
Swimming showdown
Last year, Tampa Prep stopped an undefeated season for the Sickles boys. Tonight, the Gryphons will try to avenge the loss in a 7 matchup at Tampa Prep between two of the top boys teams in the county. On the girls side, one of the area's top freshmen (Sickles' Katie Cook) will showcase her skills; so will Terrapins junior Grace Fredlake.
Numbers game
12 State-ranked volleyball teams competing in this weekend's Tampa Bay Invitational, Friday and Saturday at the University of Tampa and Tampa Prep.
Freedom grad sparks HCC
Former Freedom standout Jasmine Chriss is one reason the Hillsborough Community College volleyball team has clinched a spot in the FCCAA State Tournament earlier than ever. Chriss, a sophomore middle blocker for the defending state champs, racked up 10 kills and five blocks in the Hawks' clinching three-set win over South Florida Community College. HCC (16-1) is No. 8 in the NJCAA National Poll and awaits a showdown with St. Petersburg College Tuesday at HCC (7 p.m.), a rematch of last year's state title game. HCC has seven former county standouts on its roster.
