A rematch for the ages
It's finally here: the volleyball rematch between Land O'Lakes and River Ridge. For those who weren't in attendance at the teams' first go-round, the Gators knocked off the preseason favorite Royal Knights in a season-opening shocker.
Neither team has lost a county game since.
Land O'Lakes was 13-5 heading into its game against Gulf on Wednesday. River Ridge was 13-2.
"We've all been looking forward to it," Land O'Lakes hitter Danielle Priest said. "I know they're coming for us."
The match starts at 7 at River Ridge.
Century mark
Keith Paulk's 100th volleyball victory was also one of his biggest. The Mitchell coach passed the century mark when his Mustangs beat Sickles for just the second time in his three years at the helm. The Gryphons entered the match having won 12 straight and had just cracked the Class 6A top 10 for the first time this season.
"It's a monster win," said Paulk, who coached at Clearwater for two years before moving up S.R. 19 to New Port Richey.
It also sets up a monster rubber match if the teams meet in the Class 6A, District 7 tournament, which Mitchell happens to host.
Paulk, in the middle of his third season, said he has committed to coaching at Mitchell for at least two more years.
