Showcase Gay and Lesbian Film Festival Seventy films in 11 days For 18 consecutive years, the Tampa Bay area has had front-row seats for some of the largest names in queer cinema at the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. With each year's festival growing exponentially in both size and support, this year may prove to be the largest yet. Seventy films from more than 20 countries are slated to run during the 11-day event. The festival's opening weekend kicked off Thursday, with the Florida premiere of Kiss the Bride. Today, director Alek Keshishian's film Love and Other Disasters, featuring actor Brittany Murphy, will play at 7:30 p.m., at the Tampa Theatre, at 711 N Franklin St., Tampa. The exhaustive list of other films will play through Oct. 14 at Tampa Theatre and Muvico Baywalk at 51 Second Ave. N, St. Petersburg. Tickets range from $7 to $9. Tonight will also be the Gala Party titled "An Evening of Hip Elegance" with special guests Lounge Cat, a Rat Pack Nouveau band with a fused sound of Motown, swing, ska and Latin. The Gala Party will be held in the recently renovated 1911 Firehouse, the new home of the Tampa Firefighter's Museum, at 720 E Zack St., Tampa from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets are $50 per person. Black tie is preferred. The festival's closing weekend includes the all-women's party, Frisky Friday, on Oct. 12, also at the 1911 Firehouse, and the SURGE Men's Party at club Czar on Saturday night. Tickets are $15 per person for both events. Check the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival Web site at www.tiglff.com for more event information and a complete film listing.
