  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Visit more than 300 exhibits on everything from landscaping to remodeling, floor covering to furniture. Celebrity presenters include Kitty Bartholomew of HGTV; Stan DeFreitas, Mr. Green Thumb; and St. Petersburg Times food and travel editor Janet K. Keeler, who will demonstrate cupcake decorating. Tickets are $3, children 16 and younger free. Details at www.tampabayhomeexpo.com.

Make eschewing plastic your bag

Here's the non-plastic-bag du jour. This over-the-shoulder number was designed by Danny Seo, the "green" activist and party planner. On one side are 16 things you can do with the bag (which, by the way, stuffs into its own tiny pouch). "Be seen being green" when you use this instead of the 16 plastic bags each American uses every week. To get it, buy $20 worth of Method eco-chic cleaning products at Target, send in your receipts, they'll send you a bag. Details at www.givegreener.com.

See what your stuff is worth

If antiques and collectibles are your thing, mark the calendar for Friday through Oct. 14. The Sunshine City Antiques & Collectibles Show returns to the Coliseum, 535 Fourth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. More than 100 exhibitors will show furniture, art, porcelain, pottery and glass, silver, vintage clothing, toys and jewelry. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 13 and 14 certified appraisers will determine whether what you've got is trash or treasure. Hours: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 13 and 14. Tickets, good for the weekend, are $6; children 12 and younger free.

Designers are looking to the East

Asian motifs - embracing clean lines and natural elements - are high on designers' lists this fall. Eastern-influenced furniture, fabrics and accessories can accommodate all decorating styles, the Washington Post reports. Looming large: foo dog figures (mythical lion-dog guardians).
