Captain's Corner

What's hot: Redfish are the best inshore target. Schools of 50 to more than 200 fish are being engaged around the bay area. These are mostly 20 to 30 inches, but some of the "well-over slot" redfish have been caught the past several weeks. Once located and within casting distance, these fish have been very cooperative with feeding. Tackle and techniques: Medium heavy spinning tackle is necessary. Redfish are prone to spooking. A quiet, low-profile approach is important. Whether wading, in a kayak or in a power boat, minimize the noise and be subtle in your movements. The ability to make long casts makes a difference in hooking these fish. Watch for the shadows of these fish in shallow areas. Pay attention to baitfish spooking as the redfish move around or try to eat them. Areas that have decent tidal movement hold more redfish. You find these fish patrolling the same areas at the same tides until around Thanksgiving. As fall changes to winter, you have to adjust your approach.
