Zachary Joerin faces a variety of charges, including resisting arrest with violence.

CLEARWATER - It started with two cars racing on Drew Street east of U.S. 19, police say.

Officers gave chase, and for one driver, it ended at Pinellas County Jail, where he is booked on six counts.

Zachary Joerin, 21, lives in the 1600 block of Ridgewood Street in Clearwater, according to jail records. He works in food service.

He was charged Saturday morning with two counts of resisting arrest with violence and one count each of aggravated fleeing and eluding, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, DUI involving property damage and racing on a highway.

The incident started just before 4 a.m. on Drew Street near Park Place Drive, said Elizabeth Daly-Watts, Clearwater's public safety spokeswoman.

An officer saw Joerin headed east racing another car, according to police. Two officers, one with a police dog, gave chase.

Joerin spun out on the wet pavement, Daly-Watts said. But when he recovered from the spin, he hit one of the patrol cars and took off again.

The two officers chased Joerin north on Fairwood Avenue, according to police. The patrol car with the police dog crashed on Fairwood Avenue. Then Joerin's car crashed into a tree in the 2800 block of Edenwood Street.

Joerin ran, but Largo officers with police dogs responded and found him a few minutes later.

Joerin posted $10,000 bail Monday morning and was released from jail. Efforts to reach him were unsuccessful.

Two police cruisers were damaged, one of them substantially, Daly-Watts said. Reno, the Clearwater police dog, also was hurt, though police said they didn't have other information about its injuries.

Why was this guy charged so quickly and Nick Hogan hasn't yet? Hogan's racing left a guy a vegetable.

Throw the book at him before another gets killed... How many racers have to be killed before these kids get the message...

It's called mutual aid. It appears that Clearwater's only dog on duty was hurt in the crash. Largo responded to help. out.

There was not a race, the other car was a friend keeping up with him. They both were not smart in driving after drinking. He is a great friend and unfortunitely made a bad choice.I am glad noone got seriously injured. But do not judge him.
