PINELLAS PARK A trust fund has been set up for a 12-year-old boy who local police say may be victim of the worst case of child abuse they had ever seen. The boy was locked in a small room and frequently beaten. His skull was cracked, his nose broken and his lips were bloody when police found him in September. The boy's mother and her boyfriend were both arrested on charges related to child abuse. The boy is now in a foster-care program for children with complex medical problems run by the nonprofit Help-a-Child. Those who wish to make donations to the youth's trust fund should mail checks to: Help-A-Child Inc., c/o Coast Bank of Florida, 7600 U.S. 19 N, Pinellas Park, FL 33781. ST. PETERSBURG Health alert issued on North Shore Beach The Pinellas County Health Department has issued an advisory for North Shore Beach in St. Petersburg, saying the water has tested high for enteric bacteria, an indication of fecal pollution probably from stormwater runoff, pet/wildlife waste and sewage. Coming into contact with the bacteria could cause a disease, infection or rash. The same advisory remains in effect for the water along Treasure Island Beach. LAND O'LAKES Connerton to start on commerce park Next month, the 5,000-acre new town of Connerton breaks ground on the 175-acre Connerton Commerce Park, just off U.S. 41, said Connerton president Stewart Gibbons. Its first tenant will be University Community Hospital. UCH's 50-bed long-term care facility will be part of 150,000 square feet of medical space that the commerce park will host, Gibbons said.
