Top runners
from last week
Boys
1. Joe Cathey, Calvary Christian: Cathey won the Class A boys 5K at the Walt Disney World Classic, finishing in 15 minutes, 53.28 seconds. The senior is ranked in the top five by flrunners.com and should be considered one of the favorites to win a state title.
2. Christian Homme, Seminole: Homme, a state runnerup last season, ran the Walt Disney World Classic boys 3A race in 16:15 to finish second. He also helped the Warhawks to second place overall.
3. Wes Reynolds, St. Petersburg: The junior took fourth in the varsity open race at the Flrunners.com meet in Titusville with a season-best 17:12.
Girls
1. Katie Homme, Seminole: The sophomore was second in the Walt Disney World Classic 3A race, the highest finish of any county girl in any group. Homme ran a season-best 19:23.28.
2. Lindsey Evans, Shorecrest: The freshman, who has been running for the Chargers since she was a sixth-grader, took seventh in the Walt Disney World Classic girls Class A race (19:56.93).
3. Kailand Cosgrove, Tarpon Springs: The junior, the Times' girls cross country runner of the year last season, didn't set her goal of breaking 19 minutes at the Flrunners.com race of champions in Titusville. But she finished in a solid 20:08.55.
Among the best
Northeast's Megan Romano set personal bests in three events at last week's FSPA swim meet at the Orlando YMCA. Romano won the 200 free (1:47.65), 50 free (23.08) and 100 back (54.53).
Her times in the 200 free and 100 back are believed to be meet records and likely will rank among the top three in the nation.
The FSPA meet brings together some of the state's best swimmers in all classes. It also will serve as a state preview considering the FSPA meet is at the same site as state.
