  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Slain wildlife officer gets fitting memorial

EAST LAKE - Twenty-three years ago, state Wildlife Officer Margaret "Peggy" Park was shot and killed with her own gun while struggling with two men she encountered one night in the remote Brooker Creek area.

Park, 26, died on Dec. 13, 1984, north of a clump of oak trees, just outside the Brooker Creek Preserve property in northeastern Pinellas County.

After her death, Park's ashes were scattered over an eagle's nest she helped protect, but she had no official grave. So on Monday, Pinellas County and state officials dedicated a stone monument to Park just yards from where she died.

"Her light wasn't put out that evening," Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission law enforcement spokesman Kat Kelley said. "Her light burns even brighter every single year."

Officer Margaret "Peggy" Park gave the ultimate price for the people of the Florida. I want to thank the Commission Law Enforcement Division for not forgeting Officer Park.
