Hernando: News and Notes
By Times staff
Published October 10, 2007
Most of the coaches who played or resumed their games Monday after Friday night's bad weather were frustrated with the circumstances. Others took advantage of the rare opportunity for some in-person scouting.
At Land O'Lakes-Tarpon Springs: It was a who's who of Class 4A, District 8. Springstead coach Bill Vonada, Central coach Cliff Lohrey and Ridgewood linebacker Ben Perry were among those in attendance.
At Hudson-Wiregrass: River Ridge coach Tim Stevens and a host of players gathered intel for the Royal Knights' game against the Cobras on Friday.
At Zephyrhills-Pasco: Hudson coach Mark Nash, fresh off a 65-18 victory over Wiregrass Ranch hours earlier, sat alongside a few assistants perched high in Bulldogs Stadium. Across the field were Gulf coach Jay Fulmer and a group of his Bucs assistants. All were there to take notes on their Class 3A-8 opponents with key games ahead. Then there was the surprise appearance of former Pasco coach Dale Caparaso, now a successful defensive coordinator at Brandon.
Land O'Lakes coach John Benedetto noticed the opposing coaches and players, but said afterward, "If we had the opportunity, we'd do it, too."
Football district races heat up
Class 4A, District 8
Central is in it and Springstead is falling fast.
- Central is 1-1 entering the bye week with games against Land O'Lakes, Tarpon Springs and River Ridge remaining. All are winnable, keeping the Bears in the hunt for a playoff berth.
- Springstead is falling behind fast in the race for a playoff berth at 0-2 in the district. Four of the six teams have better records than the Eagles, but they have games against Ridgewood, River Ridge and Tarpon Springs to get back in it.
Class 3A, District 6
Nature Coast and Hernando are in the thick of the race.
- The Leopards are 0-1 in the district with three consecutive district games against Lecanto, Nature Coast and Citrus starting in two weeks.
- The Sharks are 1-1 in district with games left against Citrus and Hernando. Crystal River is 2-0 in district with a win over Nature Coast. That could leave the Sharks fighting for the runnerup spot.
