What kind of damage do fires cause in the United States every year?

In 2006 in the United States, 1.64-million fires killed 3,245 people, including 89 firefighters, and injured 16,400 others. Property loss was estimated at $11.3-billion, according to the National Fire Protection Association. A residential fire is reported every 80 seconds. Most fires in the home start in the kitchen, and about half of all fire deaths in the home occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.
