ST. PETERSBURG - Capping a violent day in St. Petersburg, police arrested three men in connection with three unrelated stabbings during a 13-hour span Tuesday.

The violence started about 10:30 a.m. with a dispute over money inside a pawn shop. Richard L. Trumpeter, 46, pawned some merchandise and began arguing with Willie James Walker, police said.

A fight broke out and police said Walker, 56, stabbed Trumpeter in the chest with a white, 2-inch paring knife, then dragged him to the back of the store at 301 34th Street S and slashed him across the face several times.

Walker was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on an attempted homicide charge.

About 12 hours later, police arrested James E. Joyner in connection with the stabbing of 19-year-old Anthony Gonzalez.

Gonzalez told investigators that Joyner kicked in the screen door to his residence at 1012 46th St. S and the two began fighting, said St. Petersburg police spokesman George Kajtsa. At first, Gonzalez thought Joyner was punching him. Instead, he was getting stabbed, Kajtsa said.

Joyner, 42, was arrested on an attempted first-degree murder charge. Gonzalez was treated at Bayfront Medical Center, where he remains in fair condition.

About 6 miles away and about an hour later, police said several people were drinking beer around a fountain in downtown Straub Park when a fight between two homeless men erupted into a stabbing.

John R. Richard, 62, was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder after police said he stabbed David R. Russell, 31. Russell remains in serious condition at Bayfront Medical Center.

Police spokesman Bill Proffitt called Tuesday's stabbings a "coincidence" and "out of the ordinary," but added "like any other big city, we're noticing a slight increase in violent crime."

Slight increase in violent crime. You must tally those numbers like you do the numbers of active patrol officers, especially those covering the streets at any given time. A gross fabrication.
