First-year Gator pays dividends
Land O'Lakes' defense has received a boost from an unexpected source. Senior defensive end Joseph Robinson is in his first year as a varsity player but has worked his way onto the field as a pass-rushing specialist. In Land O'Lakes' 39-20 win over Tarpon Springs on Monday, he had a sack and put consistent pressure on the Spongers' backfield.
Robinson didn't play football last season, instead working a couple of part-time jobs. He suited up for Wharton's JV as a sophomore.
Gators coach John Benedetto rued the fact he hadn't coached the 6-foot-2, 203-pound player longer.
"If he had been playing, he would have been a fullback," Benedetto said.
Knights shut out?
River Ridge has its work cut out in Monday's Class 2A, District 12 boys golf meet, which features several tough teams from Pinellas County. But the Royal Knights' task may have gotten harder. According to coach Mike Marlin, the team was unable to schedule a practice round at Wentworth Golf Club because all the tee times were booked.
"We're not happy about it," said Marlin, who's still trying to figure out a way for his golfers to play the course before the tournament.
"Now we have two games homecoming week."
