Region's foreclosure activity tumbled 19% in September

The Tampa Bay area is still 25th worst for foreclosures in the nation, according to the firm RealtyTrac, but the region showed an improvement on that front between August and September. Foreclosure activity, which RealtyTrac defines broadly to include homeowners late on mortgage payments, declined 19 percent, month-over-month, in Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough and Hernando counties. The hard numbers were 4,787 in September vs. 5,904 in August. In Florida as a whole, foreclosures declined 1.7 percent the past month. Fort Myers and Fort Lauderdale came out the worst. Locally, Pasco suffered most from foreclosures with one case for every 166 homeowners. Pinellas was best with one for every 365 homeowners. Despite month-over-month improvement, area foreclosures are triple what they were last year. In September, 655 foreclosed homes were to be auctioned off in the four counties. Banks repossessed 536 homes. In some cases, those categories overlap because banks usually repossess homes that don't sell at auction.
