Wallets open for holidays

A survey finds more will be spent, but on bigger-ticket items.

Consumers may be unsettled and retailers are dug in for a modest holiday season, but in Florida more people plan to spend more celebrating the Christmas holidays this year.

According to a University of Florida survey of 525 residents, 81 percent of Floridians plan to spend the same or more than they did last season.

"We're surprised," said Bart Weitz, director for the Miller Center for Retailing Education and Research. "It's not that they are buying more stuff. It's that the things they want to buy, such as high-tech games, are more expensive."

Credit the mood swing to more affluent shoppers. About 30 percent of shoppers plan to spend more this time, up from 20 percent in 2006.

I don't think a study of 525 residents represents a good sampling of our state population. How many millions live in Florida?
