TAMPA - A 52-year-old woman was in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital Thursday after the car she was in caught on fire at a gas station on North B Street and N Dale Mabry Highway, authorities said.
Donna Marshall of Rockland, Mass., parked her 1999 Chevy Malibu behind the BP gas station, went in and bought gas which she pumped into a gas can, said Capt. Bill Wade of Tampa Fire Rescue.
Around 2 p.m., her car was reported on fire. A fire investigator who was in the area also went to the station and saw her jump out of the car, Wade said. The investigator tended to the woman until an ambulance arrived and said she had first- and second-degree burns around her nose and mouth, Wade reported.
The fire's origin remains under investigation. Officials think whatever caused the gasoline to ignite was something Marshall did, Wade said in a news release. The car was destroyed but the gas station was not damaged.
