Free 'Fix-a-pit' program aims to reduce number of unwanted pit bulls The SPCA of Tampa Bay has a new program. "Fix-A-Pit" seeks to spay and neuter as many pit bullterriers as possible. Why? To help curb the pit bull and pit bull mix population. About 40 percent of dogs euthanized in the United States are pit bulls, says SPCA public relations manager Marissa Weeks. The nonprofit will pay for the surgery and even arrange it for you at a participating veterinarian close to your home. Interested pet owners can apply at the SPCA office at 9099 130th Ave. N, Largo. (Leave your dog at home, please.) Information: (727) 586-3591. It's teacher's turn for stressful quiz After years of grilling his students at Plant City's Durant High School, English teacher Ryan Haczynski will find himself in the hot seat next week. The 32-year-old University of South Florida alum was a contestant on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Haczynski can't reveal what happened on the show, which was taped in New York in August. But he said the experience was fun - and stressful. "It was certainly very nerve-racking," he said. "You second-guess everything that you know through and through." The show airs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on WTSP-Ch. 10.
