  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Reader Exchange: Photos and fryers needed right away

Let's start with what might be termed breaking requests, in news lingo. We are very lucky to be able to handle them on such short notice, a luxury for which we can thank the slowdown in mail REX experiences between summer's end and the return of our winter friends. And, although the turnaround time is short, success remains a distinct possibility when our readers are on the case.

The Suncoast Baptist Association, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary Oct. 20, is borrowing photos from parishioners of local Baptist churches in the organization to be scanned in for a slide show to commemorate the event.

Looking back over 75 years calls for a parade of memories, so if you have photos of events that were church milestones, large and not so large, happy, sad, funny, unusual, whatever, they will be appreciated.

We're told that photos of the service group Girls in Action will garner special interest, particularly those taken as the group set out from the Clearwater train station on a mission several decades ago. Did someone mention palm trees on poodle skirts and orange-tree outfits? Please call Nancy Kline at 727 530-0431 for more information.

Jim Ridings' request on behalf of the Breakfast Optimist Club also has an Oct. 20 deadline. The club's annual fish fry takes place that day and the members would like to expand their arsenal of propane-gas deep-fat fryers. The club owns one fryer, but would like to add two more.

This year's fish-fry proceeds are being donated to Camp Boggy Creek, a camp for seriously ill children. Donated fryers will increase the funds to help the kids. The donated fryers will be picked up; just call Jim at (727) 398-7369.

The next two requests share the same subject matter, but lack the urgency of our first two. When Jack Pruitt of Clearwater retired from the Air Force in 1973, he brought home a tape of German folk music that he greatly enjoyed. Unfortunately, the tape was from a reel-to-reel tape recorder, and Jack never got around to transferring the music to a cassette.

You guessed it: Jack gave away the old recorder years ago, so when he recently moved (that sure harbinger of all kinds of household upheaval) and the old tape resurfaced, he had nothing to play it on. Now he's looking for somebody with the equipment needed to transfer the reel-to-reel music to a CD. Please call (727) 726-7321 with help or advice.

While you're at it, Joe Gandy, (727) 581-3474, faces the same predicament: seven 7-inch reel-to-reel tapes of music that he'd like to put on CDs.

Barbara Loewe is trying to track down a Black & Decker shell baker and dessert maker, which truly sounds like a one-stop source of goodies. Please call her at (813) 968-3343 or e-mail bloewe@juno.com.

Mary Ann is hoping to locate a DVD copy of the film101 Dalmatians, the Glenn Close version, not the animated one. Her grandson started watching it on TV one evening, but his bedtime came sooner than the film's conclusion, so he missed the ending.

Mary Ann has checked Blockbuster stores and consignment shops to no avail. If you have had your fill of your DVD Dalmatians, perhaps you'd like to exchange it for one Mary Ann already has. Please call (813) 281-9576.

Many of us have collections of CDs, videos, books, but eventually we must cull some out - otherwise, we'd have to move out of our homes. Marty and Hal Enders have just completed some sorting and are pleased to announce that approximately three dozen CDs, assorted VHS movies and a dozen paperback novels are ready to move to new homes.

They will have to be picked up, and the Enderses would prefer that one person take all three lots. Please e-mail halmarty@msn.com or call (727) 528-2373 between 1 and 8 p.m.

Dearly beloved, let us now gather round to cannibalize Margaret Mateeff's Cuisinart food processor, model CFP-9A. The Gulfport resident recently took it out of the cupboard after 20 years and, despite that nice long rest, it didn't work.

Nobody seems to be able to repair it, so Margaret is making the usable accessories available to those whose machines are still doing their thing: two work bowls with different sizes of feeding tubes, two cutting blades and four shredding and slicing discs, which are like new. Please call (727) 381-9480.

Thank-you notes

"Please allow me to use your column to express my gratitude for the generous and gracious responses to my request for the 'plier-like' lemon/lime squeezer," writes Patricia Kennedy of Tarpon Springs.

Send requests to Reader Exchange, Floridian, St. Petersburg Times, P.O. Box 1121, St. Petersburg 33731 or e-mail cole@sptimes.com. Requests will be accepted only by mail or e-mail. This is an exchange column, so we will not run items that are for sale. Readers must agree to publication of phone numbers, including area code.

I have the same problem that Joe and Jack have with reel to reel tapes. I have some tapes from the 50's that my Dad made of family and friends singing and talking. Have tried for years to find someone to transfer to Casette Or CD.
