Nightstand: Dr. Tony Silvia
By Piper Castillo, Times Staff Writer
Published October 14, 2007
Dr. Tony Silvia, chairman of journalism and media studies at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and author of Baseball Over the Air: The National Pastime on the Radio and in the Imagination, will appear at the Times Festival of Reading Oct. 27. Silvia began his career at age 16 as a DJ for WSAR-AM in Falls River, Mass. What is on your nightstand? Until the End of the Ninth by Beth Mary Bollinger. She did a lot of research, and it also reads like a novel. It's about a minor league baseball team in 1949 in Spokane, Wash. It's very good. Who is your favorite baseball writer? Jayson Stark, former Phillies beat writer. I read him every chance I got . . . and Frank DeFord is great. Is there a writer you consider most inspirational? Shakespeare. And, you know, baseball is very Shakespearean with its drama and conflict, villains and heroes, and, of course, great comebacks.
