Three new books tell their stories with enthralling pictures.

The Arrival (Arthur A. Levine Books) by Shaun Tan is a poignantly beautiful, gently surreal graphic novel that follows the journey of a man who leaves his beloved wife and daughter and emigrates to a strange land.

Bird: The Definitive Visual Guide (DK), compiled by Audubon, won't fit in birders' backpacks, but they'll delight in its magnificent color photos, audio CD of birdsongs, glossary and concise entries on everything from the Acadian flycatcher to the zone-tailed hawk.

The Nature of Dogs (Simon & Schuster) by Mary Luddington gathers the award-winning photographer's stunning black-and-white and sepia portraits of many breeds, capturing the intensity of a border collie at work, the glee of a dachshund bounding through snow, the insouciant grins of a couple of bulldogs.
