What's Happening
The Pasco Education Foundation Inc. announced that the Take Stock In Children program has recently formed its first Leadership Advisory Council. The leader is chairman Bob Memoli of Florida Luxury Realty. Council members are: Andrea Barr, Apple Computer; Lt. Kipper Connell, Sheriff's Office; Lucy Cooper, Pasco County Schools, Student Services; Brian Corley, Supervisor of Elections Office; Renalia DuBose, Pasco County Schools, assistant superintendent; Cindy Fettig, Florida Medical Clinic Foundation of Caring; Carlton Fleming, Bernstein Global Wealth Management; Melba Hamilton, Supervisor of Elections Office; Trish Parrish, professor, Saint Leo University; Donna Prentice, St. Petersburg Times; Sandra Quinlisk, West Pasco Chamber of Commerce; State Rep. Will Weatherford; and Chip Wichmanowski, executive director, Pasco Education Foundation.
"Take Stock In Children is a community program that helps students who would never be able to advance their education due to financial hardship. The Leadership Advisory Council plans to expand the Take Stock In Children program to all students who have the desire to advance their education with the goal to find sources of private funding and mentors to perpetuate the Take Stock In Children program so that no deserving student is left out," Memoli said.
The council has been established as an advisory board to the Take Stock in Children program and represents the community's various businesses, individuals, civic, educational and government leaders. The Council will keep Pasco County's Take Stock in Children program strong, successful and sustainable.
Take Stock in Children provides underprivileged and at-risk Pasco County students an opportunity to earn up to a four year college scholarship. Currently 120 students have been awarded this opportunity and are earning their scholarships by meeting with their mentors, receiving good grades, maintaining good attendance and good behavior. Upon receiving their award, students, along with their parents, sign a contract agreeing to remain crime and drug free as they continue towards graduation day. Donor contributions through the Foundation are matched dollar-for-dollar by the State of Florida; therefore, every contribution is doubled in value.
