Go out and get your dream job (or, well, win it)
If you're stuck in a rut at work, here's a (very weak) light at the end of the tunnel. Monster.com and VocationVacations have created a sweepstakes called "Test Drive Your Dream Job." The winners get to ditch their boring day jobs for a few days for one of VocationVacations' 140 career paths. Among them: brewmaster (cool), swordmaker (super cool), schooner captain (that's cool, too), alpaca farmer (hmmmm), RV campground owner (stop right there). Ten winners will be selected at random, and two winners will be chosen from entrants who send in video auditions. Visit www.monstertrak.com/dreamjob. Not feeling lucky?
Have a say about our quality of life
Quality of life is a big influence on the economy. When talented young workers choose where they're going to live, intangibles like public transportation and green space carry a lot of weight. That's why Reality Check Tampa Bay is holding workshops to let employers and workers have their say on such issues. Their ideas will be compiled into a long-term developmental and economic game plan. The Hernando County workshop will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdayat the Silverthorn Country Club. Registration is required. Workshops for Polk, Hillsborough and Pasco will be laterthis month. To find out more, or to register, visit www.myonebay.com.
Check your calendar for these holidays
From the Holidays That No One Has Ever Heard Of Department: October is National Work and Family Month, a designation the U.S. Senate generously bestowed on it in 2003. Sounds like a great time to try to sweet talk your boss into offering flex time or telecommuting options. Speaking of the boss, you better get him or her a card soon: Tuesday is National Boss' Day - kind of the opposite of Labor Day, since it celebrates the taskmasters instead of the working stiffs. And we've noticed there are very few Boss' Day barbecues. Or maybe we just weren't invited.
