Why do some people and news organizations refer to Burma as Myanmar?

In 1989, Burma changed its name in English to the Union of Myanmar and renamed the former capital, Rangoon, as Yangon, bringing the names into conformance with their pronunciation in the national tongue. "Myanmar" has been accepted by the United Nations and used by the media. Many who consider the military junta illegitimate, such as the U.S. government, call the country Burma.
