State Rep. Peter Nehr, R-Tarpon Springs, will be the guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club of Tarpon Springs meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Cypress Run Golf Club, 2669 St. Andrews Blvd., Tarpon Springs. The program is open to the public.

Meanwhile, Mary Watts was installed as club president, president-elect is James Pratt and secretary is Ned Johnson.

During the installation, a scholarship was awarded to St. Petersburg College student Victoria Alshamai.

The Clearwater Civitans recently installed Lacoochee postmaster Frank Kelly as club president and Clearwater CPA Richard Fuller was installed as vice president for 2007-08.

The installation was held at the club's new meeting place, Countryside Country Club, 3001 Countryside Blvd., and included Paul B. Stephens School principal Ginger Wirt and Calvin A. Hunsinger School principal Stephanie Bisset. Each received a $500 check from the Civitan school candy box collections for school special needs.

Another guest from the Homeless Emergency Project, Rebecca Lett, thanked the Civitans for arranging the $10,000 donation to the Otis Green Memorial Golf Tournament.

Retired mining engineer Jack Keiler was installed as president of the Kiwanis Club of the Palm Harbor Area for 2007-08 by Division 12 Lt. Gov. Lou Remz on Sept. 30 at Angellino's Restaurant, 33180 U.S. 19 N, Palm Harbor. Additional officers for the coming year are president-elect Matt Fishel, secretary Chuck Winscott, treasurer Mike Landi, financial secretary Marty Bretthauer and immediate past president John Papuga. Board of directors members are John Kiker, Alicia Phidd, John Burnham, Murray Smith and Royal Eckstein.Gordon Lovett was inducted as a new member.

Remz thanked the previous officers for their work in the distribution of 1,224 dictionaries to all third-graders in Palm Harbor, East Lake and Oldsmar, and the pancake fundraisers in several local schools and at Lutheran Church of the Palms on Sept. 22, when nearly $1,100 was raised to help the band boosters of Palm Harbor University High School.

Another pancake breakfast at Ozona Elementary School on Sept. 28 raised more than $960 that will help sponsor six classrooms/areas this year.

Participating in the events were Chuck Winscott, Jack Keiler, John Burnham, John Papuga, Duane Young, Murray Smith, Marty Bretthauer, John Kiker, Royal Eckstein, chairs Barbara Ennis and Sonya Jones, who were assisted by Karen Reiss, Dan Calson and Kathy Maloney.

She also noted that Division 12 donated $10,000 to the All Children's Hospital telethon.

Several members received awards: Kiwanian of the Year, Nate Middleton; Silver Eagle Awards, Carl Heifetz, Royal Eckstein and Chuck Winscott; and Distinguished Service Award, John Burnham. John Papuga was awarded the Florida Kiwanis Foundation fellowship plaque and Carl Heifetz received the George S. Hixson Fellowship.

The Clearwater Horseshoe Club in Ed Wright Park, 1326 S Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Clearwater, announced the first place winners of the season opener played on Oct. 6.

They are Robert Zumbahlen in Class A30, Jessie Wayne Goforth in Class A40, Al Mueller in Class B, Joseph West in Class C, Mable Adcox in Class D and Patti Waters in Class E.
