PALM HARBOR - Seven years after starting a golf program at Calvary Christian, the Warriors won their first district title.
Monday's victory was a team effort, but got a huge boost from individual champ Taylor Hancock. The freshman was the only golfer in the 44-player field to break par. He finished at 4-under 68.
"The holes seemed really big today," said Hancock, who was playing on his home course, Tarpon Woods Country Club.
A steady breeze discouraged some early, but Hancock said he was hitting solid all day. He had five birdies and one bogey.
As a team, Calvary Christian shot 301. Aaron Watson shot 75, Michael Baskovich 77, and Trey Howard and Gregory McClimans each had 81. St. Petersburg Catholic (307) was second, and Indian Rocks Christian (325) took third. The top three schools qualified for region play next week in Odessa.
Also advancing were In Ho Hwang (Admiral Farragut, 78), Matthew Reese (Shorecrest, 78) and David Dresselhaus (Northside Christian, 79).
