Despite losing a key player, Plant shuts down a sloppy Clearwater team

CLEARWATER - Plant lost Christine Williamson, its most explosive player from last season's state championship team, but the Panthers proved Monday they were no one-trick pony.
The Panthers, ranked No.1 in 5A, came to Clearwater's gym and handed the Tornadoes a 25-12, 25-19, 25-12 defeat.
"We just made mistakes," Clearwater coach Tracy Sedely said. "We told them not to serve to the libero, and what do we do? Serve the libero 50 percent of the time."
Although Sedely was impressed with the Panthers, she said there wasn't a vast difference in talent.
"They were a better team," she said. "But not that much better. Plant had girls diving for balls they could get to; we didn't."
Sedely said she hopes the loss serves as a wake-up call for the Tornadoes.
"We need to turn this loss into a positive and realize what we need to do," she said.
Clearwater CC d. Shorecrest: The Marauders beat the Chargers 25-20, 25-16, 25-13, but there was even better news: Lizzie Ignac felt fine.
Ignac, who tore ligaments in her knee during last year's district semifinal, returned to the front row for the first time this season and reported no pain.
CCC's Mary Michael Toups finished with seven kills and an ace, while teammate Charlotte Karaphillis piled up 13 assists in just two games of action.
