Swimming showdown Berkeley Prep senior Jonathan Jordan has been on a roll lately, clocking his personal-best times in the 200 and 500 free while making college visits to Virginia and Florida. But his team may have a tough time dethroning the defending Class A, District 7 champ Jesuit at tonight's postseason opener. Can the Berkeley girls, winners of four straight titles, hold off Tampa Prep and junior Grace Fredlake (four golds a year ago)? Find out tonight.
When/where: Today at Berkeley Prep.
Schedule: Swimming starts at 9 a.m; finals at 5 p.m.
Admission: $5 per session.
Teams: Academy of the Holy Names (girls), Berkeley Prep, Calvary Christian, Cambridge, Clearwater Central Catholic, Jesuit (boys), Robinson, Spoto, Tampa Catholic, Tampa Prep.
Welcome back
Gaither junior Matt Gibney, the Cowboys' No.3 runner, participated in practice Tuesday for the first time since he fractured his pelvis and suffered a partially collapsed lung in a car accident on Gunn Highway on Sept.23.
"The car was so totaled, it looked like a bomb exploded in there," Gaither coach Bill Jenkins said.
Diving titles
Berkeley Prep junior Kyle Dent took the Class A, District 7 diving title with a school-record 4:26.50 and will go for his fifth straight state meet berth at the region meet in Fort Myers next week. Jesuit's Marcelo Garcia (4:04.59) and Arthur Harrington (3:74.05) and Berkeley's Sam Bobo (3:45.65) round out the top four. For the girls, Berkeley Prep's Marni Tuchman won the title with a 4:08.10. Tampa Prep sophomore Kliya Burton-Albright (4:02.60) was second.
