SUMMERFIELD - Heading into the Class 2A, District 6 tournament, Wesley Chapel looked to be in line for the team championship.
"Initially, our coach had told us that their averages were lower than ours," Ocala Vanguard senior Caitlin Rohrbacher said.
"So naturally, we came in and were really focused."
This focus paid off for the Knights, who carded an aggregate score of 344, 41 strokes better than the Wildcats, who also earned a spot at next Monday's regional at the Jacksonville Beach Gold Course.
In the race for medalist honors, Wesley Chapel T.J. Adipietro finished second with a round of 72, one stroke behind Candler Lake Weir freshman Heather Proctor.
Adipietro was one shot down after the first nine holes, but matched Proctor with 37 on the back nine.
Proctor, however, made a 10-foot putt for par on the final hole to hold on for the victory.
Wesley Chapel's Sam Friese (89), Natalie Wells (103) and Rochelle Stephens (121) backed Adipietro's effort, but it was not enough to rally past Vanguard, which won its second straight district title and third in four seasons.
Land O'Lakes (488) and Springstead (500) placed eighth and ninth, respectively, in the nine-team event. Central, the district's 10th team, chose not to participate.
