ST. PETERSBURG- Since Saturday, photos at Studio@620 have already showcased Midtown through the eyes of elementary and middle school students. Tonight, during the studio's "A Taste of Midtown" event and conversation, guests can experience it through words and food. The event accompanies "Midtown through Our Eyes," an exhibit of photographs taken by local journalism students in elementary and middle school. The exhibit, which opened Friday at Studio@620 showcases the students' work from a summer camp that sent them into Midtown's neighborhoods to bring back stories and photos. Tonight's event, which thanks the program's sponsors, will bring in Midtown businesses and representatives of Eckerd College, which sponsors the event. It is also open to the public. Uncle Dea's Restaurant is bringing barbecue and collard greens. Green's Bakery is bringing pies. "We want to showcase our program for people in the community," said Kathleen Tobin, journalism coordinator at Melrose Elementary. The summer camp for fourth- through ninth-graders, which began in 2004, serves students from Melrose Elementary School and John Hopkins Middle School. Both schools have a journalism program. Some of the students who took the photos - scenes of everyday life in the neighborhood - will be at the event to answer questions about their work and speak about their experiences. "They're really pros," Tobin said. "They've been interviewed by reporters and broadcasters." This is the first year for the Taste of Midtown event. "All it really is is showcasing our program," Tobin said. Libby Nelson can be reached at 727 893-8779 or lnelson@sptimes.com. If you go A Taste of Midtown Takes place 6 to 8 tonight at the Studio@620 620 First Ave. S. The event is free and open to the public.
