More than a ghost of chance for spooky thrills

As the haunting season draws near, Neighborhood Times has compiled a list of Halloween events.

Through Oct. 31

Animated Halloween Light Show: Themed light show and music, 8-11 p.m. Thursdays and 8-midnight Fridays and Saturdays for the month of October. Located at 133 NW Madison Circle N, St. Petersburg (just off Fourth Street). Free.

Haunted House: Open 1- 10 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays and 7 p.m.-1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays for the month of October, 9945 66th St., Pinellas Park. Refreshments available. $6. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Pinellas Park Police Explorers Post 912. Call 643-6095.

20 Saturday

Haunted Hike: Hike through the brick streets and alleys of the Euclid St. Paul Neighborhood and hear spooky tales told by costumed characters along the way. The family friendly event leaves from the intersection of 13th Street and 13th Avenue N, is 1 mile long, and lasts about an hour. Also features a Ghouly Goodies Bake Sale. Tours depart every 15 minutes from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit the ESP Neighborhood Association and Sallie House. Tickets are $5, $1 ages 2-12. For information, call 823-0393.

Barkoween Party: Fun event for people and pets, 5:30-8 p.m., Belleview Biltmore, 25 Belleview Blvd., Clearwater. Dogs and their human counterparts are invited to spend a howling good time, and help benefit SPOT (Stop Pet Overpopulation Together). The night starts with a costume contest. Categories include the scariest, funniest, most original, cutest and the best look-a-like costume. $10 cover includes entry into the costume contest and a trick or treat doggie bag. Third Annual Field of Screams: Features the Spook Zone, which includes bounce houses, inflatable slides and carnival games, costume contest, scary short movies, family photo area, and free Halloween candy, 6-9 p.m., Holland G. Mangum Recreation Complex, 9100 113th St., Seminole. New this year the A-MAZE-ing Tents of Terror. Something for all ages. Costumes welcome. Refreshments available to purchase. Free. Spooktacular and Fall Festival: The Treasure Island Recreation Department's annual children's Halloween Spooktacular, 6-9 p.m., Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis facility, 10315 Paradise Blvd. Activities include a costume contest, carnival games, moonwalk, refreshments and a haunted hayride with spooky cemetery. Entertainment by a storyteller, face painter, magician, caricature artist, fortune teller and more. Police Department will pass out goodies. Judging for the costume contest will begin at 6:30 p.m. Free. 547-4575.

Fossil Park Haunted Firehouse: 7-9 p.m., Fossil Park Fire Station, 6975 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N, St. Petersburg. Free. Call 893-7218.

Halloween at John's Pass Seafood Fest: Halloween and more, featuring a haunted house, a heritage area with real Florida pirates, and a children's area with a bouncing tower and bungee jump, on Gulf Boulevard from 129th Avenue to 131st Avenue. Costume contest at 3 p.m. and Trick or Treating throughout the day. Free. Call 393-8230.

Science Spooktacular: Halloween event suitable for the whole family, 7-10 p.m., the Science Center, 7701 22nd Ave. N, St. Petersburg. Learn all about nature's most deadly creatures and watch shows with live snakes, spiders, and hissing cockroaches. Planetarium and science shows are also available plus candy for everyone. Second Annual Pumpkin Patch: Child-friendly, spooky event featuring face painting, pumpkin golf, bean bag toss games and more, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Great Explorations, 1925 Fourth St. N, St. Petersburg. Also a costume parade with musical instruments and a performance of a high school musical by Northeast High School. Free with museum admission $9 for ages 1-54; $8 for ages 55 and up. Call 821-8992.

Disston Heights Halloween Party: 11 a.m., Gladden Park, 3901 30th Ave. N, St. Petersburg. Activities for age groups 4 and under and 5-9. Includes prizes and games with photos taken. Information: 328-0261.

Fall Harvest Festival: Games, prizes, food and beverage, urban hay rides and a costume contest for the kids, 5:30 p.m., Crescent Lake Neighborhood, Eighth Street N between 20th and 21st avenues. Bring a dish to share. This event is open to residents of Crescent Lake Neighborhood only. Call 823-0050.

Haunted Obstacle Poker Run: Fun event for horses and riders, 4-7 p.m., Elite Farms, 7585 78th Ave. N, Pinellas Park. This Halloween-themed obstacle course is a nonjudged event to be ridden for broke horses, or can be done in-hand for nonbroke and young horses. Course will have ghosts and goblins hanging about. They may move and shriek but no one will jump out. Obstacles will range from fairly easy and increase in difficulty. Successful completion of obstacles results in a playing card to be put together as a poker hand at the end of your ride. Cash prizes awarded for the top three horse and riders for each age division. Preregistration is encouraged but participants may register starting at 3 p.m. Also concessions, games and prizes for people and horses in costumes. Proper riding attire is encouraged for all riders, and helmets are required of minors under 18 while mounted. Dogs must be leashed. $20. Halloween Fun: An afternoon of family activities, 1-7 p.m., 1001 West Bay Drive, Largo. Features inflatable Bounce-N-Slide, a dunk tank, face painting, balloon animals and discounts and giveaways from merchants in the plaza. Also book signing by Dean Young, the creator of Blondie. Free. Halloween Golf Scramble and Tennis Mixer: Treasure Island hasn't forgotten about the big kids, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. for the Golf Scramble and 9 a.m.-noon for the Tennis Mixer, Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis, 10315 Paradise Blvd. The golf scramble is a blind draw and offers a costume contest, goodie bags and giveaways. Tennis mixer features mixed doubles costume contests, goodie bags and giveaways. Bring a snack and BYOB for the after party. For information and fees, call 360-6062.

Far Out, Fun, Fall Family Festival: 6 p.m.-8 p.m., Park Place Wesleyan Church, 4400 70th Ave. N. Call 526-3674.

Treats You Can Trust, Halloween in the Park: Treat trail for costumed creatures starting at 6 p.m., Town Square Plaza Park, 52nd Street and 80th Avenue, Pinellas Park. Costume Contest, with prizes awarded. Categories include: spookiest, prettiest, most handsome, most original, and best group. Age groups for the contest are 3 and under, 4-7, 8-12, and 13-17. No age limit for the best group category, where two or more individuals coordinate costumes to express a theme. Judging begins about 7:30 p.m. Free. Call 541-0770.

Costume Ball: Put on your best costume and get ready to swing with the big kids, 8 p.m., Gulfport Casino, 5500 Shore Blvd. S. Special Halloween music and decor, a dancing costume parade, a monster Shim Sham, and other spooky treats round out the evening. Plus, there will be lots of candy and other goodies for the big trick-or-treaters. Swing Dance Lesson, 7-8 p.m. (no partner required). Door prizes and prizes for the best costumes with winners taking home more than $150 worth of prizes.
