Grenade scare forces brief street closure

CLEARWATER Police briefly closed part of Mandalay Avenue on Tuesday morning after a patrol officer found a grenade on the sidewalk. The grenade was found about 10:30 a.m. at Mandalay Avenue and Royal Way near an empty lot at the north end of the beach. The Tampa Bay Regional Bomb Task Force determined that the grenade, which still had the pin in it, was not live because someone had removed its internal parts. Police said they don't think the grenade was left as a criminal act. Two 14-year-olds held in carjacking Two Clearwater teens were arrested in connection with a Monday carjacking, and Pinellas County sheriff's officials said Tuesday they were searching for a third teenagesuspect. Authorities say the carjacking took place about 4:30 p.m. at Jacmar Street and Pinehurst Avenue. The boys yanked the driver out of the car, forced him to the ground and drove away, police said. Clearwater police spotted the car about an hour later and arrested two of the boys, both 14, on felony carjacking charges. Their names are being withheld because of their ages. They were taken to the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center. See Jazz Holiday from library soiree Want a unique view of the Clearwater Jazz Holiday?
