Gators get a Warrior Calvary Christian senior Jose "Emman" Crescimbeni, who will swim for Peru in the 2008 Olympics, confirmed this week he has committed to the University of Florida. A favorite to win Class A state titles in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke, Crescimbeni earned dual-citizenship status in January he was born in the United States, his parents were born in Peru and earned a qualifying time for the Olympics in the 200 butterfly at the Pan-Am Games in July.
"(Gators coach Gregg Troy) is a really hard coach but they gave me an opportunity and I took it, and I plan on going there next season," Crescimbeni said.
Crescimbeni eclipsed ex-Jesuit star Tommy Wyher's pool records at Tuesday's District 7 meet at Berkeley Prep, winning the 100 back (51.39 seconds) and 100 fly (49.87).
Local swimmers, coaches honored
Three county swimmers and two county coaches won awards during the Florida Swimming's House of Delegates annual meeting last week in Orlando.
St. Petersburg Aquatics' Ariel Finke was named the short- and long-course girls athlete of the year for ages 10 and under. Clearwater Aquatic team's Taylor Katz was named the girls' long-course (11-12) athlete of the year. And SPA's Jose Crescimbeni (Calvary Christian) was the boys' short-course (15-16) athlete of the year.
SPA's Fred Lewis was the co-coach of the year. West Florida Lightning Aquatics' Kay Caldwell received the Fred Cuciger Award for her work as a swim official.
