TAMPA - The Gryphons (6-2, 1-1) have their special teams to thank for a victory over the Lions (2-5, 0-2) that kept them alive in the three-way race for the district 5A-6 title with Alonso and Chamberlain. Gryphons kick returner Craig Plastic had kickoff and punt returns for touchdowns. "We didn't expect special teams to perform this well. Plastic did a great job for us," said Sickles running back Josh Mendez, who had 19 times for 117 yards. This marks the first winning season for Sickles, and coach Pat O'Brien is proud of it. "We made it a team goal to be in the playoffs this year. Now we control our own destiny, and we are waiting for Alonso in our last game," O'Brien said. Lions coach Alex Gonzalez said his team "blew its chances" by being careless on special teams.
