Employment reflects our need to be entertained

September's unemployment rate was 4 percent for the state and 4.3 percent for the Tampa Bay area, unchanged from the previous month, according to numbers released Friday.

Both are slightly better than the national unemployment rate of 4.7 percent.

Statewide, 105,700 jobs were added over the past year with the leisure and hospitality sector posting the biggest percentage gains.

Reflecting declines in the housing market, construction lost the most jobs.

Job winners
Arts, entertainment and recreation:
up 5.6 percent
Educational services: up 4.8 percent
Accommodation and food services: up 4.4 percent

Job losers
Construction:
down 3.5 percent
Manufacturing: down 1.4 percent
Information: down 1.4 percent
