  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

The Tampa Bay Builders Association opens its Fall Tour of Homes today. More than 100 model homes are open in communities in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas through Nov. 4.

There are two showcase homes: the Dartmouth II by Hannah Bartoletta Homes at Mobbly Bay in North Pinellas; and the Montebello by Nohl Crest Homes at Ladera in northwest Hillsborough.

Visit the Montebello, which is certified green by the Florida Green Building Coalition, and take away a green door prize: a GE compact fluorescent light bulb or a low-flow Moen showerhead.

Details about the Tour of Homes are in a guidebook that is being distributed in some areas in today's St. Petersburg Times and is also available at the models. Or visit www.tampabayparadeofhomes.com.

One battery for many tools

One interchangeable battery that can power lots of tools and appliances now, and more in the future: That's the theory behind Black & Decker's VPX Lithium-Ion Battery System. The 7-volt rechargeable battery offers more energy in a small space at lighter weight and holds a charge longer, the company says. A single VPX battery is $9.99. The array of tools it powers include a drill/driver cutsaw, screwdriver, flashlight, inflator, power source and hand vac. They range in price from $19.99 to $99.99, battery or batteries included with some items.

Make your home your cottage

Ten quick ways to add cottage style, from Creating Cottage Style, a sister publication of Cottage Living magazine (on newsstands, $4.99): Add a picket fence, dutch door, beaded-board paneling, window seat or farmhouse sink; paint the floor; remove cabinet doors for open storage; dress up your porch, plant a window box or build an arbor. Get to work!
