HUDSON - In the week leading up to its Class 3A, District 8 showdown with Gulf, Hudson devoted a lot of attention to a Bucs running attack ranked first in the county.
Turns out, the Cobras weren't the only team that should have been concerned.
Running back Sean Scott rushed for 282 yards and three touchdowns and the defense came up with several crucial stops as the Cobras rolled to their fourth straight win 42-21.
"We've been trying to balance it out a little more," said Scott, who had touchdown runs of 52, 65 and 82 yards, "and the run was working for us tonight."
Although Hudson entered averaging more than 200 yards per game on the ground, it has relied mostly on the arm of sophomore quarterback Zack Wynn during the past month.
Against the Bucs, the Cobras ran on 33 of 54 offensive plays, racking up 348 yards and four touchdowns.
Scott's 52-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter tied it at 7. Later in the quarter, five straight running plays helped open a 16-yard touchdown completion from Wynn to Patrick Solis for a 14-7 lead.
The Bucs were limited by mistakes. Running back David Williams, Pasco County's leading rusher, had a 58-yard touchdown run called back because of a holding penalty.
Trailing 21-7 late in the first half, Gulf drove 66 yards on six runs by Williams to set up a first down on the Hudson 4-yard line. But with 11 seconds left and no timeouts, Williams was stuffed in the backfield by Hudson's Hunter Newton and time expired.
After Scott had a 65-yard touchdown run on the first play in the second half, Gulf scored two touchdowns to cut its deficit to 28-21. But Hudson drove 66 yards in eight plays on the next possession and took a 35-21 lead on Wynn's 5-yard run.
Williams had 207 yards on 24 carries but was stuffed on fourth and 3 from the Hudson 9-yard line early in the fourth quarter, sealing the game.
